Atari has finally unveiled the design of its Ataribox. Unfortunately, we still have no idea what it actually does. However, we can make assumptions based on on the external ports located on the outside of the unit.
The console features an SD Card slot, four USB ports, an ethernet port, and an HDMI port. There seems to be no area for discs or Atari cartridges to go in, so it seems that this will be more akin to an Android-based console like the Ouya than a modern-day console like the PS4 and Xbox One.
In an email delivered to subscribers that received the first pictures of the devices, Atari revealed that:
As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.
Classic games are a definite must-have when it comes to a console that calls back to so much history. However, with the absence of an Atari cartridge slot, it seems this will be done via emulation.
More interesting though is the mention of “current gaming content“. It’s an awfully vague statement as current games can be anything from something you can play on a mobile device to something available on a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Judging by the size and available ports, it would be safer to expect a lesser-end console at a cheaper price than the market’s current consoles.
This is all just speculation but until Atari clears it all up, keep on searching for Hidden Item!
